Road trip! Ideas?

July 12, 2015 pm31 10:12 pm

I’ve never taken a real road trip before. August will be my first.

Denver to Salt Lake City. Via all or most of: Wounded Knee, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Glacier National Park, the Salmon River, Lava Hot Springs, ID.

Cool, huh?

So what should we miss? What shouldn’t we miss? Towns? Museums? Parks?

What’s worth spending extra time in? What should be a quick stop?

Any recommendations on specific places to stay? to eat?

On types of places to stay, to eat?

This should be fun!

Denver to Salt Lake, via Glacier? It makes the drive 3x as long, adding 1100 miles (more or less). Keep in mind, western states are big and not like the cute little neighborhoods that are called states back east!

That said, Glacier itself was one of my favorite places, but far too long ago to be helpful with specific advice for your trip planning.

Here is one concrete bit of advice: stock up on games to play while driving and make sure most of them are independent of license plates and road signs. Here is a good one from Sue VanHattum to get you started: Think .

    Have fun and drive safely!

The journey is the destination. Salt Lake is a convenient airport, at the end of our horseshoe. The idea is to reach some sights, but also to enjoy some of the small town stuff along the way. We were playing with motel reviews yesterday – some were fairly hilarious.

I used to play Sue’s game growing up – we called it “Jotto” – but this is more likely long conversations, music… Never been to any of these states before, and want to keep my eyes open.

Maybe we can rig up some of those pod-cast thingies to tell us stories on our way.

Skip crazy horse. It is too expensive and you can’t get a better view than the one you get outside the gate. Go to Devil’s Tower and Custer. We skipped the park and was sorry. The Mormon Temple is interesting and the Capitol Building in Salt Lake City is magnificent.
