When we went to Mexico City (Part 2)
Let’s keep going with Mexico City. We arrived Wednesday, July 15, 2015. Part 1 got us through Friday, July 17. What’s next? See below.
This was my longest adult trip with my mom, Sandy Rosen, who died almost four weeks ago, July 15, 2026. I wish she was here to remember the stories, to help fill in details… actually, I just wish she were still here…
If you want to see what came first, here’s Part 1.
July 18, 2015 (Saturday)
Remember that four color pen from Part 1? Very important. Mommy brought the Scrabble set. What a huge part of how we used to socialize. When I visited we would play two or three games. Each day! But let me back up – Mommy brought the tiles. She forgot the board (or thought it was in a travel box, folded in.) It was not in with the tiles. Or anywhere else. But I found cardboard, and had a four color pen. Ta da! This is the board we played on all week.

Me and Mommy and Scrabble… I bet we played 1000 games. Maybe I can turn that into another story. But this is Mexico City, July 18, 2015… The day was drizzly. It was our only time on the Mexico City Metro (which was fun to ride). We were headed south – to the Frida Kahlo Museum, and the Trotsky House.
The line to the Museum was impossible. Me and Mommy were getting late starts each day – and this was the result. But what a day. So we went to the Trotsky house:

The rain darkened the concrete, and the grey of the sky, somehow the painted blues and whites just popped. That color really stands out in my memory. We found a café. I convinced Mommy to have her first Mexican hot chocolate (nothing like what she got for me and Rebecca when we went ice skating as tiny kids)

July 19
We started with a walk – climbed into an arch – watched fountains spray from the concrete. We found a mural on the street (I think Mommy knew where we were going, and got us there). I got my only street elote of the trip. (The order of the photos is scrambled. And I think, somewhere, somehow, I have video of that fountain, and kids – maybe adults too – running in and out)

Then the Museo de Artes Popular – one of the best combinations of beautiful and playful I think I’ve seen in a museum.

And finally Chinatown for a meal. Mommy, vegetarian, listened when I shared some concern about her not getting enough protein on the trip. And she ordered almond chicken. And LOVED it. The almonds shed their flavor into the sauce in a way that we had not encountered in the US. Plus the vegetables were all Mexican…

That’s my plate in front. Hers behind. And clearly she didn’t finish. But she did love it. (We returned a few days later, and she got it again)
Part III will be Teotihuacan and the pyramids… soon.
