Last day, at last!

June 28, 2010 am30 8:12 am

It may have felt like it would never arrive. But it is here.

New York City teachers (and paras, secretaries, counselors, and others), we are here.

We got cheated into an extra sweltering late June day. Friday should have been it, but they brought us right to the bitter end. But, getting here, it’s sweet.

Hand out those report cards. Say those goodbyes.

And go. Go have a drink. Or sit in the park, in the shade. Go on vacation. Or go get errands done. Go work, if that’s what you choose to do (although I don’t get why you would make that choice).

But go! Go do what you choose. Because your time, finally, belongs to you.

Today’s Boston’s last day, too! Are any kids in school in NYC? No kids are here. No kids have been here for weeks. Because our school lacks a sufficient number of computers, and this year the final exam was an on-line assessment given by Galileo, I had to give my final exam on June 9. June 9 to June 28 is a long time to convince kids that work still counts after the final exam. We all know that’s not true!

    Happy summer!

I had no idea that anyone else went as late as we do. I’m sorry for me, and for you too. But it’s over!

We give (in high school) state exams June 15 – 23, so our finals ended on the 14. That made the last two weeks mostly non-attendance days. Stupidly we had two attendance days at the end instead of one… this is the administration punishing teachers and has nothing to do with actually teaching.

Teachers report this year September 7. Kids the 8. And then a four-day weekend. But that’s another story…

Couldn’t have said it better. Now that we got free time, we can hang out as well. I owe you lunch / dinner.
