We Win! NY State Supreme Court overturns school closures

Close our schools? Not today!
Bloomberg and his Chancellor tried to shut 19 New York City schools, to disrupt communities, displace teachers. And they violated letter and spirit of the new governance law in doing so.
Shortly after noon today the NY State Supreme Court blocked the closures.
UFT President Michael Mulgrew contacted the chapter leaders with the good news.
I will add information as I learn more. For now, there is a post at Gotham Schools.
For now, congratulations to Columbus, Jamaica, Maxwell, Norman Thomas and the 15 other schools, their teachers, and all of us.

W00T!
Wow! That’s big. Congratulations!
This isn’t the best news I have ever heard, especially before a spring break, in a long time!
Kudos to all those teachers, students, parents, and community advocates who spoke up at the public hearings who believed in their schools. Your voice was heard, our communities fought for public education, and now we can celebrate this victory.
Enjoy this spring break!
We are not done.
Bloomberg’s Chancellor will appeal.
He’s already semi-violating the court by sending out 8th grade matches, making it harder to fill these 19 properly.
He’s also semi-violating the court by sending out 8th grade matches INTO the schools that were going to take the (now-not-to-be-vacated) space. There’s no room? Hmm.
And, even if he fails this year, he can try to go full-process next year.
