Cucumber tomato salads

August 14, 2007 am31 7:16 am

On Alonissos I had a huge fresh tomato salad with juicy, ripe tomatoes. There were a few cukes, and a few onions, and some other stuff. This was not too far from what I was looking for, yet not quite it. I took no photo, choosing to wait for my return to Thessaloniki a few days later. But even there, the cukes were not what I remembered from 2006, and some places simply removed the word “cucumber” from the name of the salad.

So here they are, most of them, with comments copied from my travel journal:

Cucumber Tomato from Ladadika Cuke - Tom Salad in Athonos Market

Right: Cafe in Ladadika. “1st cuke-tomato salad – disappointing but good. Too many olives, slightly bitter greens, outer ring of cukes had peels on, red onion, red and yellow pepper. Juice was not oniony/tomatoey enough.”

Left: In Athonos market: “…was closer, but too many peppers, parsley unnecessary, and pepperoncini! This didn’t make a lot of sense. Too few cukes, tomatoes were okay, 3 olives, onions were red. Gavros, though, were quite good” [gavros are small fish. I had them fried, whole, and dressed them with lemon]

Taverna Kronos - Tomato SaladCuke - Tom Salad - Athonos Square

Left: Athonos Square “…looked right, but the onions were sliced, w/no sweetness. Oregano, and too much. And the tomatoes were chilled, but not the cukes…”

Right: Queen Olga Avenue, south and east of the walls of the old part of the city. Taverna Kronos. “It feels like victory being here… lamb chops were good. Salad was sublime. It left a dark red sauce, with golden oil around it. Bits of parsley, onion… And they watermeloned me up…”

In Bulgaria even the lousy breakfast buffet in the hotel had killer tomatoes. And here? Last weekend I bought native cukes, parsley, and red onion, and some heirloom tomatoes, and tried my own hand. Verdict? I created good color, but too much parsley, and I cut my onions too small. I may have overdone the cukes, but after this trip’s lack of good cucumbers… Sauce was strong. Anyhow, there it is, untouched, on the left, and after serving some on the right (so you can see below the parsley, including the deep red and orange tomatoes, and a bit of the wonderful sauce):

like the cucumber and tomato salads do we? I miss being able to eat tomatoes, and oranges and bananas for that matter… stupid allergies. I am going to live vicarously through your pictures… :)
