Teacher Pay Scale – Stamford CT

April 7, 2007 pm30 8:43 pm

As I find them, I will post teacher pay scales, concentrating on communities not so far from NYC. For the New York City Department of Education salary schedule, click current or future.

Stamford, Connecticut is a city on Long Island Sound, just east of Greenwich and west of Darien. It is about 70% white 15% Black, 15% Hispanic. The southern half of Stamford (closer to I-95) is poorer and less white; the northern half (closer to the Merritt Parkway is very rich. Motorists and train commuters may associate Stamford with its glitzy downtown, dominated by glass office towers. Several large companies have their corporate headquarters there.

Stamford’s salary schedule is below the fold ———–>

Stamford transitioned to a new set of steps over the last few years. There was specific contract language explaining the move between old steps and new steps, but if I am reading correctly, they are entirely on new steps now.

A couple of key features: there are lots of columns moving across. There seems to be a raise every 15 credits or so… strong incentive to stay in school, at least until the 7th Year Certificate has been earned. The steps are all fairly even, except there is an extra pop going from Step 9 to Step 10. Max with a bachelors is at 11 years, with an advanced degree, at 15.

As you review the numbers below, notice how they start close to New York City. Quickly, however, a gap opens so that between 4 and 10 years a teacher in NYC is making thousands less per year. Looking at just the top or the bottom of the scale is misleading; if you choose to compare, pick some mid-career experience/education box.

But the far more interesting comparison would be to a nearby affluent town, such as neigboring Darien. Darien’s scale tops out higher than Stamford’s. But now focus mid-career. The gaps would seem to work in favor of retention in Stamford. I wonder if this is a conscious policy. (These are current salaries, and should be compared against current, not future numbers.)

Further up the coast, Westport CT’s scale is far less generous. For comparison, click to see Westport’s teacher pay scale.
