These are the current salary schedule, and the salary schedules that would kick in under the new contract October 2007 and May 2008. For salary before October 2007, click here.
Note 1: I do not know if the 5 – 10 Longevity is already included in the numbers, or if it gets added in. I suspect the former. Leo Casey wrote to confirm that the $1000 longevity payments are in addition to the amounts listed below. He writes:
The five year longevity is in addition to the steps in the June 2008 pay chart. Not everyone on, say, 6A, is eligible, since some folks are on 6A with salary credit, and haven’t worked five years in the system. Those who have worked the 5 years receive an additional $1000.

Will the 10 year longevity be based on earned years or will credited years be included.
It’s both because earned years are still your years counted. It’s like if you taught at a Day care or substituted as a teacher before being hired full time as a teacher.
I am not certain, so I should not answer. However I believe that only actual years count. If it doesn’t matter, you could live with my guess. But if you need the correct answer

I am a reassigned teacher. I was told by my Chapter Leader that as long as you have reached 8B, your steps and longevity raises cannot be blocked by the DOE due to reassignment and U ratings. Since you are talking about longevity, I assume that you have passed that threshold. I believe that you should receive your longevity raise with no problem.

Unfortunately, if you have gotten 3 U’s. You are doing something wrong! Stop trying to be a rebel and play the game where it will benefit you. It seems that as of now, you are behind the 8 ball. Give your AP some TLC and it will go a long way. The bottom line is that would you want a teacher rated 3 times with a U teaching your child? Something seems wrong here.
There are some principals who are pushing older teachers out even though their students are thriving. How can you be so sure that the teacher is doing something wrong? Why is it up to one person to decide?

The contract makes no distinction, other than that the person be appointed. However, that does not mean that there is some obscure rule.
I have called a friend (chapter leader in another school) who may have a real answer, or may have the right people to ask.

In answer to Dee’s question, I was fortunate to be credited with 8b when I started in Sept. 2004 and I did not get the 10 yr. longevity at in 2006.
Since the term longevity isn’t used in the charts until 10 years and the term has a specific definition it follows that we need to be in service in NYC for the actual 10 years.

You should be starting your 5A step. $56,048.
We can guess together, based on the pay schedule. But to get the correct answer you must know how much credit for experience the NYC Dept of Ed will give you, and how they will evaluate your degree. I cannot answer for them… they do strange stuff.
If they give you a masters and four years experience, and that’s a big if, then you would be at $51.7K, going to $52.8K in October.

You may be comparing the current pay scale to one that kicks in next Fall. Check the dates on top. If you have the same dates and different numbers, give a couple of specific numbers and we will figure out which ones are right.

For October 2006, the BOE site, C2+PD+C6, 1A = $55,858
For Current on UFT, Earned MA, C6+PD, 1A= $53,521
So which one do we follow? Does the UFT take $2000 for membership or something?
I see what you mean. The schedules match for every year except the first. If you look at the bottom of the DoE scale, you’ll see that they have a special line for new hires. New hires get paid for 1a and 1b at a lower rate, exactly the rate you found on the UFT website (and what I have reproduced, above).
Starting at 2a, the scales are identical.
I have 20 years in but out of that 20, 3years need to be bought back. I have contacted several union people and all say different things none ever work. Where do I get a buy back form? Do I call a particular Phone #? Do I go down to the Union building in person to request a form? What do I do first? Who do I talk to? Some say I must waight for a letter to come to my house granting some sort of interview, Is this true I want to retire in 6 years and do not want to wait to the last minute to but back.
The office is in Manhattan – it is the teacher retirement office – the same one you get your statements from each quarter – you have to fill out paper work that gives enough information so that they can determine the amount you need to “pay back” – call them and request it

You don’t get another raise until 10 years of service unless there is a new contract
what does the C1, C2, C6, and PD mean? And is the “earned major equivalent” the same as Master + 30?
C1 is the bachelors, I think. C2 is 30 credits beyond the bachelors, I think. C6 is 30 beyond the masters, I think. And PD is a bunch of credits in your content area. “Earned equivalent” is their way of saying that they will count a bunch of credits beyond the bachelors + a bunch of credits in your content area just the same as they will count a masters.
For the real answers to all these questions, you need to consult the DoE. I think I have links to the differential forms – if you think you are eligible to move across, please print one out, fill it out, and bring it in. The rest of the universe says you can mail it, but I always think it is better to put the app in the right box (though I believe they no longer will give receipts. Too bad)

I’m starting my 5th year this september, I’m not completetly done with my masters degree, I should be done by June. My step this year is 5a. I have a bachelors +30 (C2 i think).when do i get this longevity for 5 years? is it when the new contract kicks in or in June when the year is complete. These steps are so confusing. Also they are telling me that I probably have to take a CST exam just to get my permanent license even though i’ve been in the System since ’03. Thank you
You need to get good answers, and I can only offer good guesses.
CST: call your UFT borough office and tell them you have a certification question. Do this first. You’ve invested four years in this job, make certain that you don’t lose it over one test.
Longevity payments kick in after you’ve completed the years, so no, not this year. The exact timing? You could ask at the DoE, but I would ask your UFT Borough office.
Is the longevity pay included in the salary chart or is the longevity on top of the salary?
Also, does the longevity increase count towards the pension?
The 5 year longevity is addressed in the quote at the top (it is not in the charts). The others are included in the lines that say, for example, 8b+L10, 8b+L12, etc.
Odd question: They just posted the oct salary chart and unlike the previous chart, that new teacher rate at the bottom of the chart is missing. Are the new teachers this year starting at 1a? I started with that new teacher off-the-chart pay last year. Now, I am at 1a. If they got rid of that off the chart new teacher salary, shouldn’t I be at 2a? Am I getting screwed or jumping to conclusions?

I believe the answer is yes. We created a 1st year gap, and it took a year to phase it in (no already-working teacher took a hit).
I am an undergraduate senior who will be applying for positions within BOE next year. I am curious how the steps work. What is the difference between 1a and 1b. How long does it take to move between steps listed as the same number? I am confused as to whether I can move to step 2a in my second year of teaching or will it be 1b. Thanks for any help.
The steps are years. a and b are half year steps (and only make a difference a little later). So the beginning of your second year, normally, you would be on 2a.
There are many more details and nuances and exceptional circumstances than I know. If you have a complicated situation, or tricky questions, best to consult the DoE’s website, or, after you are a member, the United Federation of Teachers.
I am thinking about making a career change and becoming a teacher. I have a bachelors degree, but I have no idea how to find out what a teacher really makes. I currently make over $65,000 in the insurance industry, but I don’t want to take a huge pay cut to teach. Any advice?

I have been a teacher for 15 years, have never been able to leave at 3:00pm In fact the work comes home with me every night and there is tons of it to do on weekends. Also I have never been able to afford summers off, so I work another job.

It depends on what salary step (not above 4a) you are on and education. Look that up on the salary scale then divide by 200. Before this contract it was 306 or 307 a day

Jill, I do not know for certain. My guess is that the equated rate has to do with years of experience that the DoE grants you (which may be greater than the actual number of years you’ve worked). But you want a real answer, not my guess. Contact the UFT. (your borough office may have people who can answer your questions).

what percent is the teacher’s raise in May
I have been a speech therapist for 15 years but only have one year of public school experience. I have a masters degree plus 30 credits. What step will I start on? How is this determined?
You can get up to 7 1/2 years experience for paid, full time work in another nys public school. You will be on step to but all the way across the board.
I don’t have the contract memo in front of me, but the May 2008 raise looks, from the numbers, to be about 5%.
The speech therapist question is beyond my ability even to guess at. You’ll need to talk to the Union or the DoE about Salary Step Placement and Salary Differential. The forms that I have linked on the parent page are Human Resources forms for teachers only. See if your UFT borough office can either give you someone to help, or give you the right DoE phone number so you don’t have to spend days navigating through their system.
i have a masters and taught in a nyc public school for my first year (last year). Currently i am teaching at a public school in florida. When I return to new york.. will they count my previous years experience in other states and put me on a salary step that is according to my previous years, be them in NY or out of NY?
ie. if i go back to NY next year. Will they place me on step 3 ? (1 yr NYC plus 1 yr FL =3)

Hello – Thank you for all the information, but as a pre-service teacher this is all new to me and a bit confusing. So, I will post my question/situation in hopes of getting some advice or even an actual answer. I will have – if all goes as planned – my NYS initial certification come this May/June 2008. I have an MS already and have taken an additional 61 credits beyond that, some of which are undergraduate and others of which are graduate. First question: Will all 61 credits count and will I thus be “Masters + 60” from the start? Second question: Will having so much credits under my belt put me at a disadvantage, i.e. too high of a beginning salary, for a new teacher? I hope not as I bring 11+ years of work experience to the table. OK, any help is appreciated. Thanks!

— I don’t know, and am not qualified to answer. You really need to check with the DoE for this one.

— Again I don’t know, but this time I would be concerned. When you talk to them at the DoE, ask how much time after you start may you file for differentials and receive them retroactively.
To answer some of the above questions: Your anniversary date is the date that you are appointed. It only comes into play when you retire as they compute retirement years from your anniversary date. Some of this stuff is very arcane. If you were appointed October 11th, and you retire July 1st you will receive credit for one year less the number of days from July Ist to your anniversary date.
To answer the “U” rating question – a “U” rating has no effect on a person moving from strep to step of getting a longevity.
If you taught in a Public school system outside of NYC and you take a DOE job the most service you will get is 8 years. So if you taught 10 years in Yonkers, for example, you get put on step 8. Forget about credit for private schools.
I did get 1 for 1 salary credit when I came from private school in 97.
I got 3 years coming from a private preschool in Brooklyn. I was hired in May of ’09.
I’m an undergrad senior double majoring in elementary education and mathematics. When I graduate and start teaching, does that mean I’ll be in the BA+PD group because I have “a bunch of credits in my content area” or am I just a BA?
When I graduate, I’ll have close to 30 cr more than the required 120, so if I complete the 30 cr over 120, does that put me in the C2 category?

For the 30 above, they have to be either earned after your bachelors, or be part of your degree, but not necessary for the degree.
For example, I jumped from major to major, earning, I don’t know, maybe 145 credits along the way, of which I think I needed 128 to graduate. I identified 17 or so credits that played no role in my BA, not part of my major, my minor, a college distribution requirement, etc, and those counted towards BA + 30.
I don’t remember what ID is, but it stands for Intermediate Differential (I think).
I think you get the PD just for having the content area credits.
ISTR that the forms themselves include reasonable explanations. Download them, along with the directions, and see what you can make out.
Beyond that, I believe there is a UFT guide to salary. I’ll post the link if I find it.
I am planning on signing a contract to teach on January 16th in NYC and am unsure what the pay scale would be. I see that there is a pay scale that is effective October 13th, 2007 then another that is effect May 18th, 2008. Which pay scale would I be under and if it is the October pay scale (which is lower) should I wait and sign a contract later if I can and sub the remainder of this year?
I don’t know what you mean by “sign a contract.” Do you have a job, or not?
Whenever you start, you will be working under the scale that is in effect. When a new scale comes into effect, all of us move to that scale. IOW, I am working under the October 2007 scale now. In May, I will be moved to the May 2008 scale.

It is my understanding that teachers receive teachers pay, without regard to the individual license.
I am concerned that the Department of Education might, one day, try to play divide and conquer by trying to offer extra money to some licenses and not others. This would hurt our union, and ultimately all of us, seriously.
As a math teacher I have a greater obligation here, since our license is one of the more often mentioned as deserving “extra.” I am absolutely opposed to allowing them to sow those sorts of divisions among our members.

Hi, i am currently a CUNY college student set to graduate within the next two years. I have two questions… 1. I have a double major, so I will have two B.A degress ( early childhood *special ed + psychology) does having the 2nd BA have any affect on starting salary. Also, if i do decide to stick with the extra courses for special ed licensing does that also have an effect on the pay? or would I have to attain my matsers in special ed for that credit? Is it worth taking the extra classes for special education ?

Credits that were not required for either degree (or towards credit count) will count towards one differential (C2), and credits in your specialty will count towards a different one (PD).
Actually, the dual major sets you back (just a bit) since all of your credits will likely have been required for your degree.
As you get closer, talk to your certification specialist on campus, or contact ORPAL.

Hi I’m an elementary education major and an anthropolgy major. I read from previous posts that having a double major will set me back on the pay scale. Does that mean my other major won’t count as a PD? I heard that if you double major you are suppose to be making more. I only need 120 credits to graduate and im graduating with about 160. Thanks.
The double major won’t set you back, per se. If you have excess credits, you can apply them towards a pay differential.
Excess credits were not used to complete your degree. Most of us have a few of those. Dual major people often have fewer since so many credits are devoted to meeting major requirements.

Earned MA at 1a would seem to be a good guess. That would be $51k this September. You’d need to contact the DoE for an authoritative answer.
@Carol, you could apply for steps based on your experience. I am not certain of the rules, but I am certain that there is a limit to how many years they will credit (not more than? 3? 5? 8? I think 8, but not at all certain.
As far as the 54 beyond the bachelors, there are detailed rules on what counts and what doesn’t for moving columns to the right. If you click for the DoE’s Guide to salary differentials (first link is to a pdf explanation) you might get some useful information on what’s going to count and what is not. Remember, if you are not certain, there is not a penalty for applying…

I am in the salary step of Bachelor Degree plus 60 credits. I just graduated with my M.S. in Math education. Do I need to reapply for Master Degree plus 30 credits or will it be transfer automatically when I do my step differential?

These questions require an answer from someone who is actually reviewing your documents. You might ask at your college (there should be a certification office), or contact the Department of Education’s recruitment office. (I think it’s still called ORPAL. 65 Court St, in Brooklyn).

I have been teaching 17 years. I was a paraprofessional for 10 years before teaching. Although my time was credited, it did not reflect on my salary. Will I be given credit now that paraprofessionals are receiving it. Will that time now reflect in May with the new longevity increments. Will that time now be reflected for my total service in the NYC DOE, not just my teaching .
Hey everyone! I’ll be a new teacher hopefully next week, and I had a question about the differential. It says that the 30 and above credits must be taken after conferral of the BA degree. I took an extra 19 credits beyond my BA degree (but not before receiving the actual degree) because I dropped from a second major to a minor – will this allow me to apply these credits toward my 30 above?
I know you posted a while ago, but if you get a letter from your university stating that those credits were not required for your degree program, and stating how many credits were for your program and how many are in excess, they will accept that as proof that they are excess credits.
Excess credits are accepted for your BA + 30 but NOT for your MA + 30

what is the rule about when “ratings have to be given by? i was told that a teacher has to be given a “u” four days or more before the end of the school year, otherwise it isn’t valid. this is a technicality, yes but it is on the books in the bylaws/contract apparently. does anyone know where to find it for sure and what the results are if it is given on the last day of school, as mine was?
Hi, I am currently majoring in Adolescent education 7-12. I am going to try and to begin to teach in Sept 2008 with an Internship Certificate (by then I should have completed my LAST and ASW, along with my two workshops). Anywho, I was reviewing the pay scale and I notice that it refers to people with a BA degree. In my situation I have a BS degree. My question is will my pay rate still be the same as the BA pay rates.

I have 12 credits towards a master’s degree in literacy and 60 credits past my B.A. I have run into a problem with the M.A. I’m supposed to give up one summer for the “practical,” however, I don’t want to lose my retention rights for summer employment. I’m in district 75. Can I earn the next salary step with 30 credits in literacy, or do I have to actually get the M.A.? Thank you so much.

@Martine – If you have worked for 20 days or more, you will receive a rating from your principal within the last 10 days of the school year, but not less than four days before the end of the school year. It will either be Satisfactory (“S”), Unsatisfactory (“U”), Doubtful (“D”) or Not Applicable (“N/A”). If you are a probationer, the “U” rating could lead to discontinuance of your probationary period. Since there are ramifications to a “U” rating, you should immediately contact your borough office for assistance. Specialists there will help you file an appeal of your adverse rating and explain the various options available. I received a U-Rating (I was a scape-goat at a bad school), with a discontinuance, which, according to the DOE, still allows me to look for jobs. How should I approach interviews, in order to maximize my chances of finding something. At this point, I’m at the verge of giving up. I’m thinking of going back to school, maybe for the fall of 2009 semester, if I can’t find something. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The NYC DOE Web page shows the 5 year longevity in a very different way than this site. It shows the five year longevity for a teacher with c2+pd+c6 as being $75,796. Is this correct or is it very deceptive on the part of the DOE?

Mike, I am confused by your question. In order to determine salary, look at Step, Differential, and Longevity. You specified the differential, but what Step are you asking about? (Step is something like “years” though it may include experience)
In addition, make certain that you are looking at the chart from the correct year.

Lexie, a resume should summarize the things about you that you want people to know at a glance. Hold it to a page, and decide if education or experience goes first. There are classes and tips on line; use them if you like.
Edukell and Susan, the longevity is added to your base pay, and divided amongst the regular 24 checks/year.
McFly, your rating will show up on the Open Market screen that the principal sees. I don’t know how to transfer in your situation. I think the principal may have really done a number on you. Letters and calls outside of the Open Market system, expecially if you have friends who can speak to their principals on your behalf? I can’t think of better, and this sucks.
Lois, that’s a 5 – 10 year longevity payment, based on actual years in the system, and it should be added to your base pay.

Background info: I have my Masters in Special Education and I am currently working on my teaching certificate. I started working on my masters in New York, but we then moved to Texas. I finished my masters here in Austin, and now we will be moving back to New York. I have MANY hours “left over” from the college I attended in New York. I also have MANY hours “left over” from the New York C.I.T.E. program I attended before my move.
My Question: In the Masters+30 area of the pay scale do you know if any class that is relevant to your area of certification counts or do you have to take specific courses? Do these courses have to come after you receive your masters, or can you use extra grad school courses you have earned while working on your masters that are not being applied to your degree?

to rachel, the 30 credits above a masters does not have to be in any concentration, but they do need to be DoE approved classes from an accredited university. If in doubt, call the DoE and check if your courses are okayed. or just put in for the promotional (30 above) and they will tell you whether you are approved.

You don’t HAVE to let your principal know you’re pregnant. It would be nice if you did, although I guess he/she will begin to notice around February anyway. :)
It is just good practice to let your principal know you are pregnant, especially if you expect to be on leave, so that she/she can hire a leave replacement. There is no hard fast rule on this. It’s you’re call, but I would probably tell him/her if I were in your shoes.
If I calculate right, your pregnancy might be timed in such a way that you could deliver over the summer.
i am having trouble finishing my masters degree. i have have 8 years in the system and am tenured. if i can’t get an extension, do i lose my job? i was told that i would revert back to step 4a. is this true? what would be my salary, and what would be my JOB?
I know someone who did lose his job. This was 4 years ago and I don’t know if things have changed. But I believe you get 2 or 3 extensions if you have some kind of hardship. You obviously have to apply for these. Contact the State Ed Department. They do have a number where they answer questions. It may be a long wait however. They also respond by email, although not necessarily timely.
If you are in a shortage area, I can’t see how they wouldn’t give you an extension. Good Luck

New question:
I am a second year teacher in NYC who will have an MA in Ed. soon (C2+PD). I checked the 2008-2009 salary charts and I see that there is now a five-year longevity step. Does this mean that if all else stayed the same, in a few years I would jump from 5B (the second semester of my 5th year), making 56,048 to the 5L level, making 69,601? In other words, I would kind of bypass the 6A->8B levels (from a pay perspective).

As I understand it (and you might want to check with the UFT or Human Resources), you move from 5b to 6a, and add on the five year longevity. You continue to move 6a to 6b to 7a, etc, and hold the longevity until you reach 10.
Well, the thing that is confusing is that the 2008-2009 pay scale looks different from the one you have above. The one you have above has a extra per-year (1000) for L5. The current one I found online (http://schools.nyc.gov/NR/rdonlyres/CD18AE57-CC05-4016-8BC8-B2BACFC82122/38101/2008SalarySchedule.pdf ), which is linked from the NYC DOE salary page.

Sorry, I cut off my thought prematurely. The one you have has an extra amount (1000) for L5. The curent online one (link in previous post) just lists L5 like it is its own pay grade. I do see that L5 is 1000 more than 8B. But it seems a strange way to list them compared to the old way (with the L-bonues specified as discrete amounts) if that is their intent.

Well Im a para as well!! So if you have 90 credits PLUS 1 year experience as a full time para you looking at the p6 scale which it $30,000 if you have less than 1 year experience then you fall under the P5 which is 45 credit and NO experience $26,300

Anthony, you move from 1a to 1b after half a year (think it should happen around March), but note, there is no pay increase with that step (there are half year increases starting around the 6th year).

Dave, the people at the school don’t determine your wife’s pay; the contract does, and she does (by filling out the right forms). There is a limit on how much credit they will give, but I don’t know if it is 3, 4, 6, 8 or some other number of years.

Hi Layla, I believe the substitute rate a day is 147.25. You can always check the UFT site.
Assuming things haven’t changed in the last five year, a “regular substitute” is an actual title for full-time teachers who haven’t been “appointed” (I was one my first year, 2002-03) but are teaching a regular position (like Z-status). Your principal is probably referring to the unofficial title of “permanent substitute”, which just means you’ve been asked to show up to be a substitute at the same school every day, but you’re not filling in for any particular teacher. Your pay will be the per-diem (i.e. sub) rate, which is now around $154. (btw, subbing in the city is by virtue of a _license_; Any teaching title under the DOE is by license, while the prerequisite teaching _certificates_ are through the state.)

It can take them up to 6 weeks just to process your differential. I would suggest to you that you just keep on calling them to make sure all of the proper information was recieved
In looking at the 13 yr. longevity pay increase… can you explain the exact pay… is the $80,987 plus the L13 – $6,190- If not, what does the L13-$6,190 on the bottom of the chart stand for?

I have been a DOE employee for 11 years now 3 as an aide 7 as a para and now a teacher. I received credit towards my pension but I do not receive any credit towards steps.
In the past paraprofessionals were given 1 step for every two years as a para but that has changed. It is something that I believe should be changed back to the way it was.
There are new teachers who worked in offices and never stepped foot in a school that are rewarded because they worked in a subject area yet Paraprofessionals who have witnessed and learned the importance of classroom management and what works and what doesn’t work from some of the best mentors possible receive no credit for giving time in the classroom. This is wrong and should be changed back to the way it was in the past.

Carmen, there is a list of jobs at the NYCDoE’s website, but we have strong reason to believe that many jobs, perhaps most jobs, are not listed there. You could contact all the schools in the Bronx – it’s a lot of work, but I can’t think of anything better.

I really cannot answer your questions. I know something about scale and differentials for teachers, a lot less for secretaries and counselors, but I know nothing about the Social Worker contract. If you were a teacher, I would tell you to fill in the step placement form and the differential form, and let the DoE decide, but I have no idea if that is good advice for a social worker.
The UFT Social Worker page appears to be freshly updated’ I would start there. There is a phone number and an e-mail address… You could also try your borough UFT office, but I am guessing that you are better off starting out with the Social Worker/Psychologist Chapter.

Is it true if you are a substitute working for the whole year covering a teacher as Z status in leave, you can obtain the same salary as a teacher.

@ Brian – Some differentials are keyed to just a number of credits, some are keyed to credits in a specific content area, and some are keyed to credits earned after a particular milestone.
I don’t know which differentials those law school credits would count for, and if it depends in any way on your license. You could sit back, and file for a differential when you start, and let the DoE sort it out. Or, you could call them. Or call the union. Or poke around on the DoE website (go for Human Resources)

I have my BA in business, but have been teaching math in a catholic h.s. for 3yrs now. I passed the LAST, ATS-W, & math CST. I will have a total of 23 cr (not 30) in mathematics by the end of this semester.
According to my wife, a UFT member & NYC teacher, I have a very good chance of landing a job in Sept ’09 in public school due to a need for math teachers. Most schools would give me special consideration and “overlook” not starting there with 30.
Is this true? If so, what could I estimate my salary to be roughly?

Pythagoras, we’re all feeling a little iffy about next year, especially after the Chancellor’s sabre-rattling in Albany yesterday.
The last few years the supply of math teachers has been better. They take more math Teaching Fellows, and they convert more people with near-math backgrounds into what they call “Math Immersion”
Nobody cares what credits you start with, as long as you have state certification. And without state certification, no one will be interested.
There is a slight advantage, currently, to getting your certification and getting a job before you pile on too many credits. Bloomberg’s chancellor has created an accounting trick that gives principals an incentive to hire less experienced, less qualified teachers.
For salary, click “Teacher Pay Links” at the top of this page, then choose the current NYC pay schedule. You’d be 1a, and then move across for credits post-BA and mat credits.

During college, I worked as a tutor and teaching assistant in various schools, as well as tutoring and volunteering for different programs and I discovered that I love working with children and I think I have what it takes to become a teacher. The problem was that I didn’t do very well academically in college, because of a lack of time management skills. I am a NYS resident and went to a very prestigious university for undergrad (Columbia). I am thinking about joining the public school system (as a speech therapist) and was wondering if my 8 years of teaching experience in the private school would help start me off at a higher salary or since it’s a private school it won’t be accepted?

How long before the state approves the intership certifcate after applying through a college? How long before I see a pay differece and basically, am I starting at 1a? I will have a BA, substitute experince about 4 years and 27 credits.
I really cannot answer questions about how fast the State will work. As to your pay, contact human resources, or just file the applications for step placement and differential, and see how much of what you claim they give you.

I am entering a Speech therapy masters program. Once I graduate I will work in the public school (Brooklyn or Manhattan). i have no teaching experience.
question: I graduated with 124 credits (I needed 120 to graduate, 4 credits are extra.)
Also, I took some undergraduate pre-req courses recently (and this is a few years AFTER I earned my bachelors) to get into my Masters program.
Also I took some CLEP tests that I will need in order to get certified with ASHA as a speech pathologist. Generally, CLEP is supposed to be 3 credits per test.
Will my 4 credits that I have from my undergrad degree, plus my pre-req courses count towards the masters + 30 ? Also, Do CLEP tests count as credits?
Lastly, what will my salary +bonus be to start?
Also, I will be spending the next 2 years in grad school working on my Masters in Speech Pathology. Is there anything else I can do,i.e. take extra online courses, CPR, or whatever..in order to get a higher salary once I start working??

I did not receive payments for medical reimbursements related to an accident in the classroom in year 2007.
The DOE gave me only one day as a Line of Duty Injury for an accident that caused me also that I will need surgery and continue treatment.The Union did not solve this yet.

Just a quick question about salary differential. I have exactly 30 units excessive, not used toward my BA or Master’s. However, these courses were taken prior to entering the BA program at a community college. They are on my BA transcript and it does says “excess units.” Does it still count for differential? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I don’t think these can be used for the 30 above the masters; I do think that they could have been used to get you that first differential (towards the masters). But why go on my best guess? Fill out the paperwork (actually, it just went on-line, or is about to go on-line) and let the DoE process it? No harm there, right? If they approve it, you are golden. If not, then you know.

I am going into my 5th year of teaching; currently, I have a C1+PD (Bachelors + 30 credits with 36 in area of specialization). I just finished my Masters. I am on the doe looking at this new “online application”…it doesn’t specify clearly whether or not I have to just apply for C2+PD, and submit my Masters documentation only- OR resubmit everything again (i.e. Bachelors, 30 above, and Masters).
I would HOPE I just have to submit my Masters documentation since they have everything else? I applied for my C1+PD 3 years ago, and have had it ever since.

What exactly does the line “5 YR LONG” after the 8B salary step line on the current salary schedule mean? Does one automatically jump down to that line after 5 years of service? It sounds way to good to be true, so I’m pretty sure that it isn’t. Maybe I just don’t see it, but it doesn’t read very clearly. Please let me know if you have any input.

I can’t answer your question, sorry. I’ve never heard of the DSST. What is it?
In the meantime, you can contact the DoE in advance and ask them, or you can submit the paperwork (on-line, but it’s still paperwork to me) and see if they accept it then.

I see that the NYC DOE Salary Scale is effective until Oct. 31, 2009. Is there any new information available for the next contract? If not, when will it be available?
Our current contract expires on that date. Without a new agreement in place, the rates on the current pay scale would automatically continue.

This is more of a question. I would like an explanation of how the longevity system works. I would be entering my fifteenth year in September 2010. Would I be getting an extra $10, 000 as longevity?

We are still under the terms(all of the terms including salary) of the expired contract until a new contract is negotiated. I believe this is one of the provisions of the NYS taylor Law.
I was a tenured teacher with 8 years in the system before I resigned from the system to move to CA. The only way I can return is as a new hire through a waiver from a new school. If I am hired back as a new hire, would I resume my retirement, my pay scale (plus two years for teaching in CA), and rights as a tenured teacher or would I be starting over???

I have been teaching in the private schools without a state license for 15 years. I would like to now switch into the public school system now that I have moved to NY and earned a NYS license. Will NYS pay me for my past experience? Will I be able to start on step 8B? Does anyone have information on this?

The word “Current” refers to before that contract. Scroll down for the scale that became effective May 2008.
This post is really useful. Thank you for all the information and answers to questions. I have one to add. My husband is a teacher with a master’s degree. Unfortunately for us, he was absolutely sure he had filled out the request for the salary differential, but he never did. It took me months to convince him of this, and even longer to get him to do something about it. Yes, this is our fault and we are to blame. We are well past the 6 month mark where the pay increase would be retroactive. However, I would still like to at least try to get some of the retroactive pay. Do you know anyone who has successfully done this, or at least what people we should start with? I am sure it will be a fruitless battle, but I feel like I at least need to try.

MA + 30 applies to Trade Teachers ONLY.
Earned MA or Equiv + 30 are for individuals who have a bachelor’s, approved master’s, and an additional 30 credits (undergrad or grad) that were earned AFTER the conferral of your bachelor’s and were not applied to your master’s degree. This differential is for individuals who have a master’s and have 30 extra credits for extra approved classes, classes going towards another master’s or phd level.

I was wondering if you could help me with the following: I started my fifth yr teaching in Sept 2010. I just got my masters in ESL. I graduated from undergraduate school w 33 additional credits. I also have 6 credits in gifted and talented courses, 12 additional credits in a graduate program which did not go towards my masters degree and 12 more credits from a spanish clep exam. If all of these extra credits are accepted I should qualify for masters 60. What would my salary become? I am currently only getting credit for my BA. Any help will be appreciated. I really am not certain, particularly because I don’t know how much will be accepted. I do know that the 5yr Longevity doesn’t kick in until you have completed 5. If you are making $49,543 now, that might look like $61,333 if you get credit for all that you think you will (from $2,064 per check, gross, to $2,556 per check gross).

@newteacher: They can be at the undergrad or grad level, as long as they don’t duplicate credit for courses you’ve already taken. Look into CLEP and Dantes (DSST) exams.

I have been a substitute teacher for 5 years. I graduated with a M.S.Ed in 2009 and received my initial certification in SWD in 09/2010. I was asked to cover a leave-first day of the 2010-2011 academic year for an ailing Gen Ed teacher. After the 30 days I received Z-status pay (something like $223.00 per day). the position ended up being for the entire school year. The teacher I was covering did retire in March of 2011 and my pay went back to the $154.00 regular sub pay until the end of the school year. Now, through the grapevine, I have been told that substitute teachers , at another school, with the same long-term leave situation as I had, grieved and they received there FULL salary-retro (as if they were appointed teachers) and insurance. Is this possible? If so, any advice on how to proceed in righting my situation?

I am about to begin my sixth year teaching for the DOE. I just got paid today for September 1st and I do not see my longevity pay in my check. My pay was only increased by $15 more a check. That does not equal the $1600 pay increase I should have gotten this first half of the year. I am in the column for masters plus 30 and so I should be 6A+L5. I had called the DOE a couple of weeks ago and the lady said my increase will come in September. Does anyone know when I will get the longevity pay in my salary?

what does UA8W mean in the salary scale?
Hi, It begins as UA8V in september of your 8th year teaching for the board. It then changes to UA8W on March1rst in the following year. Basically UA8V is 8A on the payscale and sixs months or so later on march 1rst it becomes 8B. So for example, on 9/1/2009 i was making $72,194 which would be 8a on pay scale using the may 19th 2008 payscale. It then became $75,796 on 3/1/2010. Hope this helps!-Robert
