Firing Teachers instead of Helping Kids? The Students, Teachers and Community of Central Falls Deserve Better

Teachers and staff at Central Falls High School are making real progress in improving academics and raising test scores. They are invested in their students and their community. And while they recognize there is still much work to be done, they want nothing more than to stay hard at work and continue the momentum.

Yet, District Superintendent Frances Gallo wants to fire the entire teaching faculty. The superintendent has chosen to just blame the teachers, rather than give them what they need – stability and support – to keep the progress going, and kids succeeding.

Sign below to show that you stand with the Central Falls High School community, students and teachers in calling on Superintendent Gallo to do what is right – work with the teachers to build on the improvements that students are showing at Central Falls High School.

Like a summary execution, Superintendent Gallo’s action is reprehensible. There are a lot of things that can be done to improve education for public school students, but firing all of their teachers is a terrible lesson on many counts.

First, it tells kids that they are not primarily responsible for their progress. That alone is a dreadful message.

Also, it shows how the livelihoods of hard working middle class professionals – which students hopefully will strive to be – are subject to the temper tantrums of dysfunctional management, who are clearly trying to deflect attention from their own failings. Why try to make an honest living when you will only be harassed, abused and cowed by the boss? Some very unsavory alternatives may look more attractive, no?

District Superintendent Frances Gallo is the one who should lose her job. Her management style would be better suited to schools in China or Myanmar.

This is one of the “turnaround” models. We, and not just in Rhode Island, all of us, we need to give what support we can. And be ready to do it again, and again.

Because they will not stop in Central Falls. They will not stop until we stop them.
