Meetings and this UFT Chapter Leader

November 20, 2007 am30 8:11 am

A lot!

  • Delegate Assembly. Once a month. Downtown. Free piece of fruit, and coffee/tea. Next , December 12.
  • District Rep’s Meeting. Once a month. Here in the Bronx. Pizza, salad, soda. Next, December 5.
  • HS Cttee Meeting. Once a month. Location Rotates. Next, November 27. (I usually don’t go because they are on Tuesdays this year, when I teach, but I think the 18th is after my final exam).
  • Exec Board Meeting. Twice a month. Downtown. Buffet. I am not a member, but attend about half. Next, November 26.
  • Safety Committee (school level). Once a month. In my school. No food. Next, this Wednesday.
  • Faculty Conference. Once a month. In my school. Today. Next, December 17.
  • School Leadership Team. Once a month. In my school. Buffet. Tonight. Next, December 17.
  • Parents Association. Once a month. In my school. Coffee/cookies/cake. Tonight I chatted outside and graded. Next, December 17.
  • UFT Chapter meeting (school level). Once a month. (repeated, back to back) In my school. I chair. Brownbag. Next, November 29.
  • Consultative Committee (school level). Once a month. In my school. I chair. No food. Next, December 6.
  • This year I have been skipping the once a month Professional Staff Congress Delegate Assemblies. Downtown. Late. Good food. I don’t know when the next is.

(bit beneath the fold —>)The time piece of this (how much time in meetings?) is a bit stressful. Tonight I didn’t lose it, but I did get a little “worked up” in the Faculty Conference and the SLT, denouncing the Progress Reports and saying that we should tell our school community that we will ignore ours. I think there was sympathy for what I was (maybe loudly?) saying, but on the other hand it didn’t sound like there was support for ignoring it altogether. I think that’s too bad, since we had an A, and it would have been easy to say that this doesn’t matter. When we eventually get a B, if we complain, it will look like sour grapes.

I guess you are either unmarried and have no kids or you want to become the first New Action affiliated president at the UFT.

It takes a special person to be a Chapter leader and they get my respect…. As long as they protect the teacher over the administrator..

By the way I would vote for you.

    And he’s back…

Thanks for the respect. And yeah, I have some time…

Safety Committee and Chapter Meetings and Consultations with the Principal, no choice. Of the rest, the DR meetings are crucial.

And think about CLs in schools with more issues and more contract violations. In a big school they get one period, in small schools they get no time, and they take care of so much. Grievances, safety, member issues…

And then they try to get to some of the meetings out of school.

I also have served as Chapter Leader. I do feel that you are exaggerated just a tad.
1.UFT Chapter Leader must hold at least 6 meetings a year. Not monthly. If you elect to hold more great. Other meetings should be held according to need.
2.SLT Team Meetings meet once a month after school **elect a time keeper so they do not become a forum for time wasting***
3.Consultative Committee Meetings can meet during the day one day a month. I meet mine during the day on a common prep.
    4. District UFT meetings once a month and you get “early release” so you are not working over time or staying late for this meeting
    5. You should have a delegate to send off to that meeting.
Plus, I know you do a lot. I know I do but you elected to do the job. On the up side, you build a relationship between teachers and the administration and help teachers improve work conditions.
