Teacher Voi…

December 5, 2007 pm31 9:34 pm

Lost.

Nucleus factsheet imageMy first year teaching, I lost my voice after 5 or 6 weeks. And then again every year after that, for the first few years. Now it seems to last longer. Maybe I take better care of it. Maybe I am lucky. But my voice has been good for the last few years. Until Monday. Tail end of last week‘s sickness. A little hoarseness third period. And then fourth? Nothing.

So what do you do? Hot tea with honey, I would, except I don’t have honey. Principal says cepacol, but I don’t have any. So it’s been mostly hot tea without honey. And in any event, it’s coming back. Bleaah.

Better ideas?

Make yourself obsolete like Jackie, and then you won’t need a voice :)

Failing that, I heard that there are stores that actually sell things like honey and cepacol, so you might want to try that. ;-) I’d stick with the hot tea and honey, personally. And talk as little as possible, to rest your voice.

    Feel Better!

My solution is Throat Coat. I can find it at the local health food store. Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Lots and lots of water around you. Other than that, I forget all of my remedies to be honest.

My favorite is… I guess I should say I have no idea if it works, but it definitely makes me feel better (probably all the sugar). So you pour some sugar in a pot, you “fry” it up: let it melt and become brown and caramelized, then you pour milk over it (try not to scald yourself), heat it all up until sugar dissolves and you have a tasty drink. It makes your throat feel better, at least temporarily, and it definitely makes your tummy feel good. What else can you ask for?

twelve-hour sessions of lying on the couch.
sleeping if possible of course. but, if not,
    then even *reading* takes too much energy;
just lie there and feel sorry for yourself.
“resting eyes and mouth” my mother called it.
anyhow, that’s the strategy *i’ve* been using.
(and the illness — not laryngitis, so this may not
apply in your case — doesn’t seem to be getting
    any *worse* …)

    good title.
