So what’s your game here? Just doing your part to bolster the Freedom of Information Act? Or is this part of some much more insidious plot to lure California teachers to the East Coast? I mean, seriously, these districts can’t offer health insurance, right? Whatever your point, I’ve gotta stop reading these.
These are annoyingly difficult to find.
I teach in NYC, which 33 years ago had what I understand were very good salaries. In the face of the fiscal crisis of 75 (Ford to City: Drop Dead) something bad happened, maybe a losing strike? and we lost ground and continued to lose, to the point where 10 years ago we were very far behind the immediate suburbs. In 2 of our last 3 contracts we made up ground on salary, but in return for givebacks (ugly givebacks, in my opinion, that should not have happened).
So, now? It is good for us to know how much ground we made up, and how far behind we still are. (I will do a bit of analysis with this and the wonderful Long Island link that two readers provided – we have narrowed the gap, but especially compared to the immediate suburbs, the lag is still large).
And for you? I’ll warrant that our cost of living eats up any seeming disparity between our pay scales. And as I post these, remember, these are little districts. Most of us work at the scale in the contract link at the top of the page.
