No current UFT age discrimination suit

At last Monday’s Executive Board meeting a question and follow-up about the UFT’s age discrimination revealed:

  • the suit was withdrawn, without prejudice, when the ATR side agreement was reached.
  • to refile the suit, the UFT would need to collect fresh information.
  • members individual suits were not withdrawn.

    Let me get this for the ATR side agreement that resulted in only 16 ATRs given a full-time position we dropped the age discrimination lawsuit? How predictable as our union fails the older teacher time and again.

    People want to know why I am against “Unity” this is the reason why.

    They made the side agreement sometime in November — the copy they’ve posted on the UFT website has no date but the Exec. Bd approved it on 11/18/08. You can find those links on the UFT main site.

    Here’s the disconnect.
    On Nov. 21, I was forced to withdraw from that lawsuit as part of my getting my job back through arbitration. If the lawsuit had already been withdrawn by Nov. 18th, someone should be explaining why I had to do this.

    To this day, in fact, I have heard from no teacher involved in that lawsuit that the UFT or NYSUT had told them the suit was not going forward because of the side agreement. I believe the teachers assumed it was dropped because the lawyers on our side could not make a case for age discrimination that could stick.

    We need to know why the UFT kept this information from us. And we need to know why they are playing games with our careers.

    SHAME, SHAME, SHAME.

    Age discrimination is what the 2007 reorganization was about.

    I will never get a job as an EA because of my age, years in the system.

    After 32 yeara of bing a teacher, and supervisor with a glowing record

    I am an ATR. I happen to be 56. I believe that there is a connection

    to age and not being given my job after receiving tenure. Oh yes…

    tenure, again no protection against discrimination here. They just

    reorganize and change job titles to steal hard working peoples jobs

    away. What kind of Mayor forces good citizen’s to suffer pay losses

    and job insecurity? Mayor Bloomberg!
