What does the 1a, 1b 8a, 8b etc stands for?
Those are “steps.” Under normal circumstances, a teacher moves up one full step each year. For several years the half-steps (8a, 8b, etc) matter. Teachers move up a half step 6 months from the full step.
In some cases teachers might start on a step higher than 1a.
